Optimizing Coal-based Power Development to Improve Energy Conversion Efficiency
1985, CHNG was China’s first to import 350MW coal-fired generating units and constructed power plants in Dalian, Shang’an, Nantong and Fuzhou. 1992, CHNG was China’s first to import 600MW supercritical coal-fired generating units which were put into operation in Huaneng Shanghai Shidongkou No.2 Power Plant. 2004, the first domestically-made 600MW supercritical coal-fired generating unit was put into operation in Huaneng Qinbei Power Plant. 2006, the first domestically-made 1000MW ultra-supercritical coal-fired generating unit was put into operation in Huaneng Yuhuan Power Plant. 2007, the first domestically-made 600MW ultra-supercritical coal-fired generating unit was put into operation in Huaneng Yingkou Power Plant. 2009, the first domestically-made 660MW supercritical tower-type brown coal boiler was put into operation in Huaneng Jiutai Power Plant. 2009, the 1036MW ultra-supercritical coal-fired generating unit, the biggest of its kind in China in terms of single capacity, was put into operation in the Huaneng Haimen Power Plant.
Developing Hydropower and Wind Power to Increase the Proportion of Clean Energy
1986, construction of large-scale hydropower plant began at Huaneng Manwan Hydropower Plant, which was the first joint investment by provincial government and the Ministry of Water Resources of PRC. 1996, Huaneng Taipingyi Hydropower Plant was built and put into operation. The hydropower plant was the key construction project in the Eighth Five-Year Plan. 2004, Huaneng Nan’ao Solar Power Plant, China’s first wind-solar hybrid power generation system, was put into operation. 2009, the 300MW Huaneng Fuxin Wind Farm, the biggest independent wind farm in China, was connected to the power grid. 2009, the No.1 unit of Huaneng Changchun Biomass Thermal Power Plant, the first biomass demonstration project in China, was put into operation. 2009, the Huaneng Shilin Photovoltaic Demonstration Plant was officially put into operation. December 2009, the No.3 Unit of Huaneng Xiaowan Hydropower Plant was put into operation, with which Huaneng’s total installed capacity exceeded 100GW.
Strengthening Comprehensive Retrofit to Reduce Pollutants Emissions
1993, the first large-scale thermal power plant flue gas desulphurization unit was put into operation at the Huaneng Luohuang Power Plant. 1999, the first large-scale coal & power integration project was built in Huaneng Yimin Coal & Electricity Co., Ltd. 2004, CHNG was the first to advocate and execute the GreenGen Program for high-efficiency and environmentally-friendly power generation with near-zero emissions of pollutant and CO2. 2006, Huaneng Beijing Cogeneration Power Plant was the first of its kind in China to import slag tapping, low nitrogen combustion, and fly ash recirculation technology, and was also the first to adopt the new “chimney and cooling tower integration” technology as well as the wet-method desulphurization technology. 2007, the No.1 and No.2 cooling towers of Huaneng Wulashan Power Plant were successfully demolished and dismantled, indicating that the “Developing Large Generating Units and Retiring Small Ones” Project was implemented in full scale.
Relying on Technological Innovation to Tackle Climate Change
2007, CHNG signed an agreement with the Beijing government to conduct a CO2 capture demonstration project and established the Beijing Greenhouse Gases Capture and Treatment Laboratory. 2007, CHNG, together with China Nuclear Engineering Group Co. and Tsinghua University, jointly invested to build Huaneng Shandong Shidaowan Nuclear Power Project. 2008, CHNG completed construction of China’s first CO2 capture demonstration project in coal-fired power plant at Huaneng Beijing Cogeneration Power Plant. 2008, CHNG established China’s first Greenhouse Gases Emission Reduction Research Center in cooperation with Shanghai Electric Group. 2009, China’s first IGCC demonstration project, Huaneng Tianjin IGCC Demonstration Power Station started construction. 2009, the world’s largest CO2 capture facility (100,000 tons/year) was constructed and put into operation in Huaneng Shanghai Shidongkou No.2 Power Plant.
