IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi Visited the Huaneng Shidao Bay HTR-PM Demonstration Project
On May 25th, at the invitation of the China Atomic Energy Authority (CAEA), International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi and Deputy Director General Liu Hua paid a visit to the Huaneng Shidao Bay High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor Pebble-bed Module (HTR-PM) demonstration project. Zhang Tao, the Vice President of China Huaneng Group Co., Ltd., accompanied the delegation.
Their visit to the Shidao Bay Nuclear Power Science and Technology Museum, the main control room of the demonstration project and the reactor hall of the nuclear island gave Grossi and his delegation a whole picture of China Huaneng’s HTR-PM demonstration project and the technological innovation achievements of nuclear power. Grossi spoke highly of China Huaneng's solid progress in the construction of HTR-PM demonstration project and its remarkable accomplishments in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and had an in-depth discussion on the promotion and development of HTR-PM nuclear technology. Grossi stressed that China Huaneng has led the world in advanced nuclear power technology and made remarkable achievements in its high-level construction of HTR-PM demonstration project. The IAEA will further deepen cooperation and exchanges with China Huaneng, and hopes that Huaneng actively shares its experience in HTR-PM construction and engages in the international cooperation such as the preparation of technical guidelines for small modular nuclear reactors (SMR), so as to help HTR-PM technology go global.
Vice President Zhang Tao extended a warm welcome to Grossi and his delegation. He expressed China Huaneng’s hopes to carry out deep cooperation with IAEA in various fields, such as the technological innovation and commercial promotion of HTR-PM, SMR technology management and standard establishment.
It’s Grossi's first visit to China since he took office as the IAEA Director General in 2019. His visit lasted about one week. He stressed that with its world-class nuclear technology, China's nuclear power industry is going global. China also boasts new nuclear technologies, such as SMR, fast neutron reactor and HTGR. With diversified technology reserve, China could provide other countries with multiple technology options.
During Grossi's visit to China, the CAEA and the IAEA signed the Practical Arrangement on Cooperation in the Construction of Nuclear Power Infrastructure and the Deployment of SMR.
